Zumba originated in the early 1990`s from Colombia, and it was a wonderful chap named Beto Perez, who was a dance trainer there, who came up with this wicked concept. It was only by chance that he invented this type of dance workout, as legend has it that one day, when he got to his usual class to teach aerobics, he had forgotten the tapes he used for his class. Luckily, Beto had some old salsa and merengue music tapes that he loved to listen to in his car.

Merengue originated from the Dominican Republic or Haiti, depending upon which `expert` you speak to, and it is again a fast paced rhythm played by accordion, drums and guiro. Note that the guiro is a Latin-American percussion instrument consisting of an open ended hollow gourd with parallel notches cut into one side.
The Cumbia originates from Colombia in South America and has wonderful creole and tropical ingredients in its saucy mix.
Reggaeton, as you might have guessed by the name, has a Jamaican influence and has that great reggae beat with a base heavy drum prominent. You do what is known as crumping in Zumba to this.
Last of all there is Flamenco which is from southern Spain and adds a fantastic fresh dimension to zumba. The finger snapping and hand clapping that you do in your Zumba workout is directly from Flamenco.
So ladies and gentlemen, Zumba fitness is a heady concoction of all these dances and influences, that blended together gives your body the workout to end all workouts. And guess what? It is wonderful fun! Which of course is why this particular dance workout is magnificently popular all over the world.
So that is the short and sweet answer to what Zumba fitness is? The thing is with exercise, we are not all masochists and do not particularly enjoy the pain of it, so to find something that is as thrilling and crazy and fun as Zumba is a real boon.
